This is an exciting opportunity for a permanent position with a highly innovative company developing a ground breaking product, in Ireland, in the telecoms market.
The successful candidate will be a PhD graduate scientist/engineer with an open and enthusiastic mind, a strong personal interest in engineering and photonics at the highest level, capable of learning quickly and with an appetite for knowledge. The successful candidate will exhibit a strong curiosity sense on deep technical matters, an eagerness to understand, develop and control complex issues so as to deliver engineerable solutions to real world photonics problems. We are actively seeking a PhD graduate in Photonics engineering or science, who is comfortable in taking on risks and challenges in the photonics domain and who can individually, or as a team, seek solutions to real world problems in this area.
Working within a cross functional environment, the candidate needs to exhibit a desire to influence and work with other engineering functions to achieve personal and company goals.
Main Responsibilities:
• Work as part of a cross functional team delivering the photonics domain expertise to an overall solution.
• Ideate, develop, execute/support laboratory investigations and experiments according to defined test plans and procedures.
• Contribute in developing and analyzing optical communication systems, as well as the subsystem employed in the build of such systems.
• Contribute to proposals with designs, cost estimates, and technical write-ups.
• Actively researching and developing the next series of technologies and techniques for adoption in future photonic subsystems
• Adherence and development of in house development processes
Experience, skills and qualification required:
• Completed a PhD degree in Engineering or Science or M.S. in Optical Engineering (or equivalent degree).
• A PhD thesis involving both experimental and modelling work plus
• Have a achieved at least a 2.1 at primary degree level.
• Previous industrial experience working on photonics subsystems (lasers, receivers, DWDM filtering and amplification technologies and/or high bit rate transceiver/transponders) a plus
• Exhibit a strong need to succeed, with a rigorous attention to detail but with an eye to timely definition of problem and execution of solutions.
Technical Skills:
• Expert laboratory practice familiar with the main Test and Measurement equipment and techniques of defining optical components/subsystems and systems
• Have a deep understanding of the cross over between physics and engineering problems, with the technical depth to allow engineerable solutions to evolve
• Familiar with the main photonic layer impairments, and the impact such impairments have on communication systems
• Knowledge of general communication theory, techniques and technologies
• Good working knowledge, or use of MATLAB, LabVIEW or VPI, a plus
• Good competent knowledge of MS Office applications.
Interpersonal Skills:
• Ability to write, present and converse clearly, concisely and confidently on complex technical problems, solutions and workarounds.
• Excellent team working capacity and ability to influence.
• Proactive and adaptable and capable of taking charge and control of defined engineering functions/subsystems of expertise.
• Open and willing to seek help and mentorship in new areas of responsibility and challenge.
• Motivated, with a positive attitude to succeed in the face of technical risk and uncertainty.
